The Bayer group will participate in the design and control of enzymatic and microbial systems with improved functionalities that will allow economical conversion of biomass into soluble sugars for yeast-mediated production of bioethanol.  In this context, we have developed artificial multienzyme complexes called designer cellulosomes, in which we can integrate desired polysaccharide-degrading enzymes in precise architectural arrangement for maximum efficiency in degrading plant-derived biomass into soluble sugars en route to production of biofuels.
